ElectroMode: Professione Modella

Ho trascorso l’adolescenza ai tempi delle top model e... sono sopravvissuta. Certo, a causa loro la passione per la moda si è trasformata in una specie di ossessione, ma tra la fine degli anni Ottanta e i primi anni Novanta chi poteva dirsi immune? Ogni apparizione in passerella scatenava stati di isteria collettiva; un fenomeno micidiale di cui fu artefice Gianni Versace insieme a Steven Meisel e Peter Lindbergh.

Nulla di simile prima né in seguito, sebbene alcune modelle siano sempre state più di semplici appendiabiti: muse, fonti d’ispirazione, personaggi leggendari, incarnazione dell’ideale di bellezza dello stilista, hanno contribuito a raccontare cambiamenti estetici e sociali attraverso l’unicità. Persino i Kraftwerk hanno cantato la mitica Das Model.

Per me hanno significato l’approccio definitivo alla moda e a quantitativi industriali di riviste. Da allora ne subisco il fascino con un debole per il passato, le bellezze anomale e per le figure bizzarre e debordanti. Ed è dalla più anomala, bizzarra, mutevole che voglio iniziare questa rubrica dedicata alle modelle che hanno lasciato il segno: Kristen McMenamy.

Ah, il nome della rubrica è un omaggio a un romanzo che ho letto tanto tempo fa e che mi ha divertito e depresso in egual misura: Professione Modella di Jay McInerney. Le modelle non ne uscivano proprio bene ma questa è un’altra storia.

I spent my adolescence when the top models reigned and… I survived. Certainly, because of them my passion for fashion turned into a kind of obsession, but between the late Eighties and the early Nineties who was immune? Every appearance on the runway caused a collective hysteria; a crazy and unique phenomenon created by Gianni Versace along with Steven Meisel and Peter Lindbergh.

Some models have always been more than simple hangers: muses, sources of inspiration, legendary personalities, embodiment of the fashion designer’s epitome of beauty, they have contributed to tell aesthetic and social changes through their uniqueness.

Even Kraftwerk sang the mythical Das Model.

In my experience they meant the approach to fashion and a great amount of magazines. Ever since I’ve been under their spell with a weakness for the past, the anomalous beauties and the odd figures. And I want to start off this column with the most anomalous and odd model: Kristen McMenamy.

P.s. The name of the column is an homage to a novel I read long ago: Model Behavior (in Italian language Professione Modella) by Jay McInerney.

KRISTEN MCMENAMY

Kristen nasce a Easton (Pennsylvania) il 13 dicembre 1964 in una famiglia numerosa della media borghesia cattolica.

Altissima, magrissima, androgina, alle scuole superiori è considerata il “freak” della situazione; bollata col soprannome di “scheletro”, non riesce a trovare nemmeno uno straccio di ragazzo che le faccia da cavaliere al ballo di fine anno. Eppure vuole diventare modella. Così, dopo una breve sortita al college e la fallimentare partecipazione a un concorso per cover girl di Cosmopolitan, si trasferisce a New York proponendosi a tutte le agenzie. E tutte la respingono; Eileen Ford arriva addirittura a consigliarle un passaggio dal chirurgo plastico.

Evitando quello che sarebbe stato un suicidio, Kristen intuisce che la pelle diafana, la bocca grande, il naso prominente e gli occhi da rana (come li avrebbe definiti il commentatore William Norwich) avrebbero potuto essere apprezzati altrove, a Parigi per esempio. E come in una versione rock’n’roll del brutto anatroccolo, grazie a una mostruosa tenacia da quel momento inizia una carriera unica per varietà e longevità che toccherà l’apice negli anni Novanta.

Kristen was born in Easton (Pennsylvania) on the 13^th of Dicember 1964 in a numerous, catholic, middle class family.

Very high, very skinny and androgynous, during the high school she was considered a “freak”; branded with the nickname “skeleton”, she didn’t manage to find a boy who accompanied her on the senior prom. But she wanted to become a model. So, after a year of college and a failure at the Cosmopolitan cover-girl contest, she moved to New York putting forward to every major agency. And every agency rejected her; Eileen Ford advised her to resort to the plastic surgery.

Kristen sensed that the diaphanous skin, the large mouth and the froggy eyes (so the commentator William Norwich defined them) would have been appreciated elsewhere, in Paris par example. And like a rock’n’roll version of the ugly duckling, she started a unique career which reached the peak in Nineties; the career of a non conformist model ready for everything in order to have the perfect photo.

Bionda, rossa, bruna, castana, perfino senza sopracciglia - depilate da François Nars nel backstage della sfilata autunno-inverno 1992 di Anna Sui -, Kristen è camaleontica, esibizionista e intensa. Prediletta da Peter Lindbergh - con cui lavorerà per il calendario Pirelli 1996 -,

Si narra che a Karl si debba l’unione (terminata con un divorzio lo scorso anno) con Miles Aldridge. In realtà Karl si sarebbe limitato a suggerire a una Kristen depressa per le peripezie col fidanzato dell’epoca - presumibilmente Hubert Boukozba, proprietario del celebre locale parigino Les Bains e padre di sua figlia Lily (quella Lily McMenamy, ovviamente modella) - di uscire col fotografo con cui stava scattando ovvero Aldridge. Sarà proprio Karl ad accompagnarla all’altare nel 1997. Kristen, bellissima e incinta al quinto mese, indossa un abito monospalla in chiffon nude disegnato da Lagerfeld e un copricapo di piume di Philip Treacy (divina!); damigelle di nero vestite, Naomi Campbell e Saffron Aldridge.

Karl is said to have been the propitiator of the union (ended last year with a divorce) with Miles Aldridge.
Actually Karl simply suggested to Kristen - depressed for the vicissitudes with her boyfriend (presumably Hubert Boukozba, father of her daughter Lily) - to go out with the photographer with whom she was working. Karl accompanied her to the altar in 1997. Kristen, five-months pregnant, wore a one-shouldered, nude chiffon dress by Karl Lagerfeld and a feather headdress by Philip Treacy; the bridesmaids Naomi Campbell and Saffron Aldridge wore black.

Le istantanee della festa restano indimenticabili come i baci provocatori con Kate Moss sulla passerella di John Galliano e con Courtney Love nel backstage di Versus. Famoso anche l’aneddoto che l’avrebbe vista furiosa precipitarsi al fitting di Atelier Versace al Ritz, denudarsi e opporre una “posa couture” al rifiuto d’ingaggiarla perché poco adatta a quel genere di sfilata. Risultato? Arruolata immediatamente.

Ma la cosa più sorprendente è sicuramente il recente ritorno alla ribalta. A quasi 50 anni, apparentemente immune da ritocchi, con una prodigiosa chioma grigia che arriva alla vita e un ancor più prodigiosa forma fisica - nonostante i quattro figli all’attivo - Kristen è l’outsider perfetta per incarnare storie al limite tra sogno, fiaba, incubo e leggenda: un po’ Lady Godiva, un po’ cavaliere in partenza per le Crociate, un po’ sirena, creatura gotica in preda a strane metamorfosi o gentiluomo elisabettiano, spopola su Vogue Italia, W, Love, I-D davanti all’obiettivo di fotografi come Tim Walker, Sølve Sundsbø, Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meisel, Juergen Teller, Mert & Marcus o Dancian.

The snapshots of the wedding party are unforgettable like the provocative kisses with Kate Moss on the John Galliano’s catwalk (1994) and with Courtney Love in the Versus’ backstage (1997). Another famous anecdote is the furious appearance at the Atelier Versace’s fitting (1997) from which she had been excluded because not “couture enough”; she bared and striking a couture pose said “Am I couture or what?”. She was immediately booked.

But the most surprising thing is certainly the recent revival. At almost 50 years, seemingly immune from plastic surgery, with a silvery mane and a phenomenal shape, Kristen is the perfect outsider for the editorials suspended between dream and fairy tale, nightmare and legend: she has embodied Lady Godiva, a medieval cavalier, a mermaid, a gothic creature prone to strange metamorphosis or an Elizabethan gentleman for magazines like Vogue Italia, Love, I-D and photographers like Tim Walker, Sølve Sundsbø, Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meisel, Juergen Teller, Mert & Marcus or Dancian.
