Circa un mese fa ho avuto il piacere d’intervistare Sebastiaan Vandevoorde aka Moonlight Matters. In quell’occasione abbiamo parlato dei suoi remix, dei suoi progetti futuri e della sua attività di produzione per emergenti band belghe. Fra queste ci sono gli Shindu.
In concomitanza con l’uscita presso Kitsuné del loro singolo Happy House – e dei relativi remix firmati da JBAG, Martians, Polydor, Herr Styler e Midnight Savari – ecco a voi l’intervista con Christopher (Static), Maxime (Greedy) e Chibi.
Happy House è potenzialmente la summer hit di quest’anno, è una cover riuscitissima dell’omonimo pezzo dei Siouxsie and the Banshees. Il brano originale non viene stravolto; anzi, è sapientemente rivisitato e gli accenti gothic new wave lasciano spazio a un suono originale, una via di mezzo tra synth pop e disco-house.
La splendida voce di Chibi è il valore aggiunto di una traccia trascinante e accattivante.
Gli Shindu sono l’ulteriore conferma che il Belgio sta diventando una delle regine della musica elettronica europea e internazionale.

Ciao ragazzi! Potreste dirci qual è il vostro background e come vi siete conosciuti?
Ci conosciamo da ormai un paio d’anni. E come tu saprai, noi (Cristopher e Maxime) abbiamo iniziato come dj electroclash Static & Greedy, facendo date in tutto il Belgio e oltre confine. Dopo un po’ – come il 90% dei dj di questi tempi – abbiamo iniziato ad avvertire l’esigenza d'intraprendere la carriera di producer. Abbiamo così escogitato un piano generale per mettere insieme tutte le nostre idee musicali in modo da dar vita a un progetto capace di definire il nostro sound. È stato una sorta di gioco di sperimentazione all’inizio, ma col passare del tempo abbiamo deciso di far convivere tutti gli elementi che amiamo. Per quanto riguarda la parte vocale, la nostra cantante è Chibi: la sua audizione è stata eccezionale!
Chibi: Amo la musica sin dalla più tenera età. Ho provato a suonare qualche strumento, ma ho capito rapidamente che la mia voce era il miglior strumento possibile!
Happy House è una traccia disco-house “fresca”, pronta a invadere i dancefloor di tutto il mondo. È davvero cool! Qual è la vostra ricetta quando decidete di produrre un brano? E perché, in questo caso, avete scelto di fare una cover di una famosa canzone dei Siouxsie and the Banshees?
Grazie, siamo davvero contenti che ElectroMode apprezzi la nostra musica! È sempre divertente sapere che le persone ci associano alla disco-house o alla nu-disco. Probabilmente Moonlight Matters c’entra qualcosa J. Noi siamo semplicemente Shindu, musica che fa venir voglia di festeggiare, sorridere, ballare ...
Chibi: Da buona fan degli anni ’80 mi è sempre piaciuto ascoltare musica punk e new wave. Così, quando abbiamo deciso di fare una cover, ho scavato tra i miei vecchi cd. Il primo pensiero venuto in mente è stato Siouxsie and the Banshees. Ogni volta che ascolto Siouxsie cantare, non posso fare a meno di cantare insieme a lei! Così ho scelto l’album Kaleidoscope con la mia canzone preferita “Happy House” e l’ho presentata ai ragazzi. Il resto è storia J.
Come siete entrati in contatto con la Kitsuné? Siete felici di lavorare con una label sempre alla ricerca di nuovi talenti?
Chiaramente siamo molto eccitati riguardo alla release su Kitsuné. Il nostro amico e produttore Sebastiaan (Moonlight Matters) ha presentato il nostro lavoro alla label e loro hanno subito deciso di fare un singolo con noi. Kitsuné riveste un ruolo preminente nella scena indie-dance; farne parte è davvero un onore. D’altra parte, si tratta di un’ulteriore pressione a fare sempre meglio per le nostre prossime tracce. Vi definite “una rinfrescante synthpopsensation in grado di incarnare la sfida rispetto al fare musica all’alba di una nuova era”. Potete approfondire questo concetto? Considerate la produzione musicale una sfida?
La scena musicale odierna è una giungla! Così tanti dj, così tanta buona roba prodotta alla velocità della luce. La digitalizzazione ha ridisegnato la geografia musicale e ha imposto nuove regole. L’evoluzione a cui gli artisti stanno andando incontro non è facile da valutare; la scena musicale non è mai stata così imprevedibile. Crediamo che molte persone possano capire questa cosa.
Come già detto nell’intervista con Sebastiaan (Moonlight Matters), la scena musicale belga è attualmente in fermento. Qualche anno fa sono stato al concerto dei Vive la Fête a Bruxelles e da allora mi sono innamorato della musica belga. Chi apprezzate maggiormente tra Aeroplane, The Magician, Soulwax, Moonlight Matters, Villa, ecc .. ?
Semplice! Prova The Neon Judgement, 101, Telex, 2 Belgen, Front 242 ... Altri nomi contemporanei come The Subs, Customs, Intergalactic Lovers, Teddiedrum ...
Siamo un paese piccolo, ma, quando si tratta di musica, il Belgio è sempre stato promettente!
Quali sono le vostre influenze?
Le influenze sono innumerevoli, impossibili da elencare. Sono davvero troppe per nominarle tutte.
I vostri mixtape sono fantastici! Quale criterio usate quando scegliete le tracce di un dj-set?
Grazie! Anche noi ci facciamo ogni volta la stessa domanda. Riescono le tracce, selezionate in questo modo, a evocare una determinata atmosfera? Sono significative per Shindu? Non vogliamo che i nostri mixtape diventino monotoni e sbiadiscano dopo un po’ di tempo.
Quali sono i vostri progetti futuri? Siete pronti a esibirvi in un live?
Studio e touring. Stiamo lavorando a un bel po’ di roba buona!
Una volta che avremo abbastanza materiale per esibirci in un live, voi di ElectroMode sarete i primi a saperlo!!
Approximately a month ago I interviewed (what a nice interview!) Sebastiaan Vandevoorde aka Moonlight Matters. We talked about his remixes, his future plans and his cooperation – as producer – with budding Belgian bands. Among these there is Shindu.
In conjunction with today’s release of the single Happy House by Kitsuné – with the remixes of JBAG, Martians, Polydor, Herr Styler and Midnight Savari –, here is the interview with Christopher (Static), Maxime (Greedy) and Chibi.
Happy House – great cover version of the homonymous Siouxsie and the Banshees’ track -is meant to be the summer hit of this year. The original song hasn’t been twisted; indeed it’s been revisited in a masterly way and so the gothic new wave style has been replaced by a different and original sound, a good blend of synth-pop and disco-house.
The amazing voice of Chibi embellishes an exhilarating and catchy track.
Shindu proves one more time that Belgium is becoming one of the queens within the European and international electronic music.

Hi guys! Could you tell us which your background is and how you met up?
We’ve known each other for quite a couple of years now. And as you might know, we (Christopher and Maxime) started out as electroclash dj’s Static & Greedy touring all over Belgium and beyond. After a while, and like 90% of the dj’s out there today, our hands started itching to get into production as well. So we thought up a master plan to get all our ideas together about music and think up a project that would define our sound. It was kind of a game of ‘trial and error’ in the beginning, but as time went by we decided to throw together all the elements we love. For the vocal part, we needed our singer Chibi to get behind the mic. The audition she did was exceptional!
Chibi: I’ve always been very into music since I was a child. I tried to play a couple of instruments, but quickly realized that my voice was the best option.
Happy House is a refreshing disco-house track, ready to invade the dance floors all over the world. I really appreciate it! What’s your recipe when you decide to produce a track? And why, in this case, you’ve chosen to do a cover version of the Siouxsie and the Banshees’ song?

Chibi: As an 80’s fan, I always enjoyed listening to Punk and New Wave.So when we decided to make a remix I digged into my old cd’s. The first thought that went through my mind was Siouxsie and the Banshees. Everytime I hear Siouxsie sing, I tend to sing along with her! So I picked out the Kaleidoscope album with my favourite song “Happy House” on it and introduced it to the boys. What followed is history J
How have you got in touch with Kitsuné? Are you happy working with a label, which is always on the lookout for new talents?
Obviously we are very excited about the release on Kitsuné. Our friend and producer Sebastiaan (Moonlight Matters) introduced Shindu to them and they were rapidly convinced to do a single with us. Kitsuné is a very important player in the Indie dance scene. Being part of it is a true honor. On the other hand, it brings extra pressure to do even better for our next tracks! You define yourself “a refreshing synthpopsensation that embodies the challenge to take music into the dawn of a new era”. Can you elaborate it? Do you consider the musical production as a challenge?
Music business these days is a jungle! So many dj’s, so many good stuff being produced with the speed of light. The map’s been redrawn with digitization, which brings different rules to the game. The evolution artists are going through is not easy to estimate and music has never been so volatile.
We think most people can relate to that.
As I’ve already told Sebastiaan, the Belgian musical scene is currently on fire. I absolutely love most of the current Belgian acts; some years ago I was at the concert of Vive la Fête in Bruxelles and I’ve fallen in love with the Belgian music ever since. Whom do you appreciate more among Aeroplane, The Magician, Soulwax, Moonlight Matters, Villa, etc .. ?
Easy! Check out The Neon Judgement, 101, Telex, 2 Belgen, Front 242…. Other contemporary acts like The Subs, Customs, Intergalactic Lovers, Teddiedrum,... We’re a small country, but Belgium’s always been promising when it comes to music!
What are your influences?
There are no limits when it comes to influences. As a matter of fact, there are just too many to share them all.
Your mixtapes are awesome! What criterion do you use when you choose the tracks within a dj-set? Thanks! We ask ourselves the same questions every time. Do the tracks in order breathe a certain astmosphere? Are they representative to Shindu? We don’t want our tapes to turn gray after some time.
What are your future plans? Are you ready to perform a live-act?
Studio and touring. We’re currently working on some real exciting stuff!
